Thanksgiving is a popular holiday filled with delicious foods and fun. Unfortunately, that doesn’t always mean fun for our teeth. Since many foods served at Thanksgiving dinners are very high in sugar content, this can cause tooth decay and cavities in those with dentures. If you’ve recently had your permanent dentures placed, here are a few tips to help you have a happy smile on Thanksgiving Day!

Clean Your Teeth Regularly

With all of the food that will be consumed throughout the day, it’s crucial that you clean your teeth regularly. We recommend brushing after every meal or snack during the day to wash away debris that could be stuck in between your gums. Don’t forget to floss as well to remove any plaque from between your teeth that your toothbrush may miss.

Apply Mouthwash Before Going to Bed

Many denture wearers experience dry mouth at night. To combat this, using a specialty mouth rinse before bed can help provide relief and fight off some of the germs that can lead to infection.

Use Adhesive

If you’re worried about your dentures slipping around while you’re eating, you may want to use a bit of adhesive to keep them in place. A denture fixative will provide you with the extra grip you need for a secure bite. Just a little dab behind each tooth will help prevent them from moving around awkwardly while you chew your food. The fixative will make the dentures slippery when you talk or drink, so be sure to remove them after dinner is done.

Practice Good Oral Hygiene

Good oral hygiene is essential for keeping your dentures in good shape. This includes brushing your dentures at least once a day, but it’s best to brush them after each meal. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and denture paste to gently clean the surfaces. Avoid using harsh bristles, and never use toothpaste on your dentures since it can scratch their surface. Rinse the dentures thoroughly before putting them back in your mouth.

Schedule Your Next Appointment

In addition to being careful with your dentures, it’s also important to practice proper dental hygiene with regular visits to the dentist for checkups and cleanings. These visits will give your dentist the opportunity to examine your mouth and give you personalized recommendations on how to keep your mouth healthy and clean.
